The
Cottage Returns to Linn Street!
After
being gone for over a year, theCottage has returned to its
roots. As you can tell, it will no longer look like a 'cottage.'
We will have more space, two floors, high ceilings, more light,
more variety, longer hours, more space for parties, loads
of convenient parking, while still at the edge of downtown.
And with this new website, you will be able to more easily
order from home or office with the convenience of the on-line
menus

That's us, there on the right

Grand
Opening!
We've
made it! We made it through a year of being displaced and
cramped, and now we're in a big, beautiful new space. Come
on in and see what's new.
Be
sure to stay tuned because the new
site will mean many new things, and better things. We have
changed our identity to The Cottage Bakery & Cafe as we
serve longer hours and more varied menu. We will be licensed
to serve alcohol at the new site which allows us to cater
to a more varied party offering. Be sure to check us out!

Then...
The original
Cottage stood in the middle of the block on South Linn, between
Iowa Avenue and Washington Street. Lora Alberhasky, daughter
of the owner of one of Iowa City's food institutions, John's
Grocery on East Market Street, bought the Cottage business in
1987 from Mrs. Eicher. Having worked closely with her family
much of her life in the preparation of deli foods and catering
parties and picnics, Lora wanted to strike out on her own and
offer a larger variety of deli foods and baked desserts for
the downtown lunch time crowd. She also saw the need for more
catering options for the market of professionals living in the
area. Still working in alliance with her family when possible,
she ran the Cottage for a number of years before seeing the
need for more space for the lunch crowd. Changing patterns of
eating out required more space for serving food, so the Cottage
grew by doubling it's space in the mid 1990's. This produced
a great space for parties, a great deck for outdoor eating,
and more seating space.
Then in
1998 the City of Iowa City told Lora about their plans for a
parking ramp........

Recent...
The most
recent location of the Cottage at South Dubuque and Iowa Avenue,
was an accident of Iowa City development. The old site, at the
intersection of South Linn Street and Iowa Avenue, became targeted
for demolition two years ago as the city continued its quest
to meet demands for convenient parking in the downtown area.
Though the proposed parking ramp would have retail space in
it, nonetheless, it required the demolition of the Cottage and
surrounding buildings on that half block, to make way for the
construction of the new parking structure. In the tight market
of downtown spaces available for a sizable eatery, Lora was
finally able to find temporary space in a traditional eatery
that has seen numerous names above its doors over the years.
Some loss of space, some loss of cozy and ambience, but a good
space for a temporary location.

Now...
Now
we're back! Its been a wonderful effort on everyone's part to get
us here, and we're bigger and bolder than ever. We're at 14 S. Linn,
with the greatest 'light' ambience in town for cafe eating. We have
more counter space to help us with an expanded menu, and booth,
table and counter seating. We are the first business open in Iowa
City's largest downtown development in some years. The parking garage
and other retail spaces are still being finished, but we're open
and ready to provide for your dining pleasure. Please stop in and
check out our new look, and be sure to note what a wonderful space
it is for private parties for whatever
occasion! |
